Support for Windows Vista/XP About to End

Share

According to Windows Secrets patch watch editor Susun Bradley support is about to end for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 users as well as users of the original Vista version.

Despite previous warnings against upgrading to Service Pack 3 for Windows XP it seems that as of July 13, 2010 systems running Windows XP SP2 won’t receive automatic security updates from Microsoft. (See the original Microsoft blog post on the subject here.) July 13 also marks the end of support for any version of Windows 2000 if you’re still running that.

April 13 is the deadline for users of Vista who haven’t installed any service packs. You’ll need SP1 or SP2 to remain secure.

Check your version of Windows by clicking Start, typing winver in the Run box and press Enter.

Get the latest security updates at the Windows update site. (And remember you can only access this site using Internet Explorer.)
